Learning the STEPS...

We are not all born with the attributes, characteristics or attitudes that make us leaders, successful or happy.  Some of us are!  But most of us have to work at it.  Just as some successful athlete may be born with the natural, god given talent….others have to hone their skills and talents to be successful.

The STEPS program is a simple way to develop many of the characteristics and attributes possessed by many of the successful leaders of our time.  Some of you may already be practicing some of the STEPS.  Others may find the STEPS to be a big change in their life.  Either way, the purpose of the STEPS program is to help you create the habits and attitudes you need so you can reach the goals and dreams you are after.

Each day simply shade-in the corresponding footstep to your action. Each letter represents a basic and fundamental activity.

Sleep – What do you feed your subconscious when you fall asleep?  Do you fill it with thoughts of worry and fear for the next eight hours? Or do you dream of joy and happiness? Do you know the thoughts you feed your subconscious mind with will get replayed throughout the night and affect your tomorrow?

We want to encourage you to begin to focus your thoughts before you go to sleep at night in a direction that will have a positive impact instead of a negative one.  When we talk about sleep we are NOT talking about how many hours you slept or if it was a restful night sleep.  We are talking about taking advantage of those eight hours you sleep and filling your subconscious mind with thoughts that will have a positive influence in your life.  We want to harness the power of our subconscious mind to work to our advantage instead of disadvantage.

If you went to sleep with a smile on your face because you were thinking about how much better tomorrow is going to be.  How you are going to pass your test, give the great presentation, win that race, enjoy your significant other, smile that your medical test results were better, whatever. The goal is to focus on the positives at night instead of the negatives, by either mentally visualizing them or using positive word affirmations.  If you can do that, shade-in the first “S.”  If you simply fell asleep with the TV on or collapsed in bed from being so tired and didn’t feed your subconscious anything healthy (positive)….leave the step blank.

Think – What thoughts feed your conscious mind during the day?  How many hours pass in the day before you give yourself – some words of encouragement?  Do you even give yourself a positive pep talk for the day…a simple it’s going to be a great day!  I feel great!  Life is getting better!  I can do it!  Something that can help motivate you to get out of bed.  Are you replaying thoughts of “I’m NOT this or I CAN’T do that?” Do you feed your mind with positive thoughts that build your confidence and self esteem? Your daily thoughts of “Yes I can or No I can’t” have a direct impact on your tomorrow.

If you think you can or can’t – you’re right!  Positive affirmations and self talk have been taught for years and have a direct impact on our life.   What we think in our daily life reinforces those thoughts.  The more you replay those thoughts, whether positive or negative will mold your character and personality.  If you think and repeat to yourself that you are never going to lose weight, overcome your illness, find someone to be happy with, or get a raise….etcetera it is going to happen. You’re creating your own self-fulfilling prophesy!

If you use positive affirmations and visualization during the day that strengthens and supports a positive outlook instead of a negative one, shade-in the “T” for your accomplishment.  If you found yourself replaying negative thoughts or didn’t nourish yourself with positive thoughts, leave the footstep blank.

Eat – If you are trying to lose weight, get in better shape or overcome some health issue…diet is critical!  Therefore, what foods do you feed your body with?  Is your diet helping or hindering you? Do you eat more unhealthy or healthy meals? You can’t get healthy and thin if you don’t eat better!  It’s that simple!

The more nutritious foods you eat, the healthier you will be.  If you live off fast foods, processed, refined foods and wonder why you can’t lose weight or overcome a health condition, you simply need to look at what you feed your body!  Do you eat more foods that are known and proven to make us healthier or not?  Keep in mind a little dessert on top of a healthy meal can ruin the health benefits of the whole meal.  We’ll go more in-depth with healthy eating issues later, but if you ate well for the day, shade-in the “E” for your accomplishment.  If you ate poorly for the day, leave it blank.

Physical – Do you get any physical activity in your day? Is it a priority? Is it a chore or something that is fun for you?  Are you trying to stick to a regular exercise program?  Exercise has a positive impact to so many areas of life including; weight lose, cardiovascular and mental health, anti-aging and of course confidence and self esteem!

We all know the benefits of exercise and physical activity and many of us want those benefits, but like other wants – if you don’t block-out the time and make it a habit – it won’t happen.  You don’t have to join a gym or hire a trainer…you can if you want.  But if you allotted some time to get some physical activity in your day, shade-in the “P” for your accomplishment, otherwise leave it blank.

Spirit – Do you have a spiritual connectedness?  Have you let your spiritual muscles get flabby?  How do you feed your own personal spirit? Individuals with a spiritual connection and those who nourish their own personal spirit have better health, relationships and outlook on life.

A spiritual connection is like any other goal – you have to work on it.  You don’t wake up and have a strong physical body if you don’t exercise and train!  The same is true for both our spiritual connection and personal spirit.  Do you take the time during the day or week to build your ‘spirit’ muscles or are you guilty of saying I bought this book or I’ve been wanting to read scriptures, or I wanted to take this class or learn how to do ….whatever, but haven’t.

Whether you want to use the word Spirit to think of a powerful all knowing God or your own personal spirit, you have to take the time to nourish both of them.  To ignore the power of the ‘spirit’ is like missing a meal in a day…it leaves you empty.  Are you allotting the time in your day to build your spiritual muscles.  If you do feed your Spirit shade-in the last “S” for that accomplishment, otherwise leave it blank.

You can use the “S” for both the connection to a higher power and your own personal spirit.  Or you can shade-in the footstep for one action and either draw a line underneath, or circle, or write an “S” or something to signify the other action.  There are a number of ways you can set this up for yourself.
